Headline Poetry & Press is a volunteer-operated small press that exists to support the resistance of this time. We seek work that tells a story, is relate-able, with an artistic quality that transports readers INTO themselves by way of a social issue. Work that documents as much as it does reminds us of our common fragility. We consider this brave, vulnerable, and necessary work. Headline wishes to highlight creatives who uniquely weave this necessary work with their truth to existing powers. Poetic form is not important to us, so pen your voice without such constraints. We look forward to reading your work.
SUBMISSIONS (we are currently on hiatus)
- We seek poetry that speaks from personal spaces through the lens of our current social, political, and economic realities.
- Be brave with your writing – go deep and be mindful.
- We are nice people. Let your worries about submitting melt away.
- We do accept previously published and simultaneous submissions.
- Don’t abuse writers, authors, or editors.
- No matter our decision regarding your piece, we encourage you to keep opening your voice through poetry. Keep writing. If you choose to put your work in the public sphere – keep submitting.
- We are not currently accepting applications for regular contributors
; poets published on the page in between the special edition cycles. We seek both emerging and established poets. We welcome yourapplication.
HOW TO SUBMIT
- Please complete the form below with ONE poem per submission.
- You should hear within 4-8 weeks. Please check back if it supports you.
- If your work is published with us, you obtain rights to publish your work elsewhere with first rights offered to Headline Poetry & Press, and we reserve the right to include your work in future digital and print publications.

ROLLING SUBMISSIONS FOR WEEKLY FEATURE SECTION |
The section is for any social or political issue – micro and macro scale works both welcomed. We seek work that opens readers’ minds to your voice and perspective in ways that are relate-able and accessible at the most basic human level. These previous sections will now all be a part of our Weekly Feature Section:
ERASURE THE OCCUPANT | We welcome erasure poetry created from the words of the White House Occupant. This could include tweet threads, entire or partial speeches, or (……) Submissions vary from extravagantly colorful to black marker taken to text. This column will run until he is VOTED OUT!
PANDEMIC POETRY | The inner stirrings inspired by COVID-19, and resulting quarantine, belong in our Rx Poetry section. Pandemic poetry has no strict guides, but favor works that inspire community across borders as well as unique insights to COVID-19 arriving at this specific moment in history
ROE V WADE-RELATED | Patriarchy. Women Supporting Women. Women’s Health. Reproductive Freedom. Economic Freedom. Sexualized Violence. This section is for poetry on all of it.
SPEAK AS THE TREE | Trees witness our lives, hold our history, and speak a specific truth to our personal and shared memories. We welcome poetry from the roots, bark, branches, leaves, canopy.

The Commons v. 1: Everything Grieves (print)
This call will open January 1, 2021: This collection of poetry that honors the entanglement we have with each other’s grief; be it through objects, the earth, history, or current cultural norms. Featured visual artist: ALESSANDRA SEQUEIRA
The submission fee is $5. Selected poets awarded $40 per piece. We will produce a print edition during 2021 with sales going to maintain operations of Headline, including future additional award-based calls.
