Roe vs Wade-related; reproductive freedom
Grandma had a baby at seventeen
Drugged and strapped to a bed
At a school for unwed mothers
Did she hold her daughter
Before she was forced to let her go?
Her siblings didn’t know
Grandma had a baby at seventeen
She didn’t have a choice
She didn’t have a voice
I don’t want that lack of agency
For our daughters
They deserve more from us
Not less than us
They deserve their agency

Note: Grandma had a baby at seventeen was written after seeing your call out on twitter for Roe v. Wade poems. I immediately thought about my Grandma. To survive that sort of trauma so young and come out of it fierce, proud and obnoxiously funny, speaks to the strength and resilience of women. I want to honour those women who didn’t have choices by ensuring we don’t give up any hard fought ground.
