sand dunes on fire
funnel of flame & black ash

sky blood red
people mourn the color green

koalas, kangaroos, wallabies
nest after nest of warblers,

swallows, children & families
fleeing and dying

even the fortune-tellers refuse
to predict this plight

tarot cards burn like torches
the queen of cups pours water

from her chalice onto the scorched ground
she calls to gods & angels

who climb down from the heavens
red ruin singeing their lips

they bow down in prayer
before the inferno

there are seven circles of hell
& fire season has just begun
