Ballad for the Streets of History

Lincoln Park, Chicago

A balcony of books we stand amidst
yesterday’s and former homes of people
we don’t and can’t know anymore than that
they’re here still with us,
overlook us with records & kindness.

Stacks stocked keep us in touch
to ways that we may be or become without
denying or dismissing or undoing the self we already ares.

Bridge me over the back of histories written
on sidewalk walls where fine lined
stencils keep walking away from stairways
that lead to a future uncertain by a government unelected.
