A caravan of ants

bimbled, through stones

as slaves made to stand

and cheer in a coliseum

The masses heard Caesar

through nervous punches

ringing from centurions’

clinks of drawn swords

They smiled up to flags

worn as winter throws

eagles, heavy winged

drained by exposure

The nobles drank

while rounded teeth

were ossified walls

rotting out onto dirt

Rome, fat and bloody

too bloated to rise

fell under its own weight

and the ants marched out

untouched by wine
