I Found You This Morning Mama
by Mercury Sunderland, Regular Contributor

i found you this morning mama

sewing together a last-minute birthday present

reminiscent

of another year

mother i am happy

for what you do for me

and i’m sorry that

i cannot be happy today

on my own birthday

this morning

is smelling of death

just like that morning

when my close friend fin

was found dead

in a los angeles apartment

two weeks before

my twentieth birthday

i guess what i’m saying is

living during a pandemic

after one of my closest friends

died from a sudden illness last year

makes my twenty-first birthday

a whole lot harder to enjoy

august days

feel the heat of a long summer

melting and fizzling out

any energy you might have had

to match that sunlight

i found you this morning mama

sewing together a last-minute birthday present

reminiscent

of another year

mother i am happy

for what you do for me

and i’m sorry that

i cannot be happy today

on my own birthday

this morning

is smelling of death.
