TWO LEGGEDS AND THE HOLY EARTH
by Legrand McMullen

1.
our highly evolved kingdom of animals
is ever for sale
is ever hawked upon auction blocks
chipped away from wisdom spirituals

our nice humanities wetted and smoothed
to look best
while being tarred and feathered by howling
stories
of everlasting happiness invented in the
momentary vapor of quick deals and repeated
signatory rebirth
by bottomline store front messiahs ever trading
ever trading

our motley earth inhabitants up for sale each
civilised minute
in halls of legislatures, schools, grocery stores,
theatres, barracks and courtrooms
by cologned soft peddlers selling booklets about
new jobs and recycled virtue and balance-
about how it all must be true!

hairless finite animals in dark suits with pockets
deep angling for scrip
and mounting hunts for it, and casting drift nets
in the ocean society
only endangered by sagging numbers
and dwindling test-tube consumers, and shrunken
market headway

then scapegoat managers are finger painted
in backroom board meetings
by dues fattened trader saints catered-to
and crotch-rubbed, grinning,
they exchange pats and stabs taken from the
shake-down pecking order fake-book

the hunt continues…
but ever spiritually rusting from staring
in the mirror
ever eroding from endless pondering the big
money bang
empty by ever imagining a sublime coitus to
spawn the commerce clone

then off to greasy elbowing among similar
playground jack players
who repeat what is said, knowing it will be
translated later
in alcoholic whispers before denials on news
at eleven

2.
eco-statesmen waving in-our-best-interest papers
as whales and
timber yield to price-tagged soups and stationery
and perfumes

then dropt in mailboxes that arrive with a
thank you for asking genitalia tease
and ha-ha flattery gone buy-buy
and shake-your-hand celebrating your
pre-approved lifestyle trip
to perfect rainforests somewhere else…

media showers our cribs and graves as we
become suckling avatars
dwelling in luxurious black hole shopping malls
staring at blue-shift news holes that spew
industrial prophecies
interspaced with front page suppositories
revolving through

generations of families and genus and species
oozing supply and demand eternal
as the debate is bought and sold and controlled
and mortals pass on the fine print of salvation
and no one is the wiser
and all act according to showroom laws picked
up naturally

3.
blaring tv lawyers babble late-breaking gospels
and wink at their wallet life-cycle
the great mysterious autopsy is shrink wrapped
and pushed by slick visions of junk market gods
bleating born again customer service and haunting
minutia of the soul

talking faces bore in on tele-prompters that occupy
the cathode rays
and hook up intravenous wheelchairs and
blurb-cast round the clock revelations
from pancaked mugs and coiffed studio wigs
about corporate love products
poised logo eyes and bright white television
characters stamped out and
baptised under suits covering growling bellies

worked-out, rigged, spun and inoculated against
unrehearsed spontaneity
timid and fearing and working diligently to stave
off the holy ghost epidemics of source-substance
and vision quests
of dharma confrontations
of our next door neighbor’s bodhi something
or other…

4.
oh yea…the redemption scale tips with sleight of
hand politicians
our instinct is explained with sound bites
purchased from drive-by heroes
while industrial predators look up in the heavens
then quietly replace the marquee and spin the
message wheel again
always full of the usury sacrament
always full of the secret prayers of assholes
always full of hegemonist confessions
“forget about wounded knee”…
as they hold drawstrings on commercial paper
and broad spectrum public
on the one big eye hubble
on the infrared remote to hinterland breakfast
tables

on factory installed bullhorns as we drive the
freeways quietly listening
on our refrigerated just-in-time bedroom
retirements
and on hollywood’s hole-in-the-ground
where souls are spent every second of this age
